am I too old to start learning an instrument?
No!

Although with instruments like with languages, it is easier to learn up until we reach 8 years old but it is still completely possible to learn new instrument later in life.

how often should i take lessons?
it depends on how much time you can dedicate/how professional you would like to become.
Professional: 2 lessons per week (ages 4-15), 3 lessons per week (ages 15-18)
dedicated: 1 longer lesson per week or 2 shorter lessons
For fun: flexible lessons

how much should i practice?
If you want to get really good/professional you should practice about 4h per day;
small kids up to 8yo start with 1-2h, 8-12yo 2-3h, 12yo and older 4h or as much as needed.

Dedicated younger students should practice between 30min-1h per day, 12-15yo practice 1-2h per day; you can take one day off.

If you really struggle to practice even the minimum amount of time but you still want to make progress you must follow this rule: it is better to practice more often (couple times per day) for a shorter amount of time (5-10min) rather than once per week for 4 hours straight.

what instrument should i buy?
Violin: Determine the size you need (check the violin sizes question)
Used or new? either way, it is always a good idea to ask a teacher or another musician to go with you so when you try the instrument they can tell you how you sound from a
distance (it happens sometimes that the instrument sounds beautiful right next to your ear but the 3rd row in the audience will not be able to experience that). Professional instruments tend to be way more expensive than student/amateur ones. Music shops offer cheaper options usually between $100-$2000. Once again, even when you go for the most expensive student violin it does not mean it will sound the best. Always ask "another pair of ears" (preferably your teacher) for an advice.
Piano: acoustic piano is preferred by majority of teachers and remains the only right choice for professional pianists. However, nowadays digital pianos offer weighted keys and quite realistic sound as well as extra features that make learning piano even more fun (different instruments, various acoustics like in-church or concert hall, pre-recorded drum loops, chords etc). Such instruments do not require to be tuned. On the other hand, if there is no electricity student is left with no instrument.
what is my violin size?
deciding the correct instrument size is very important. you must not get a larger instrument for the future as it will sabotage your effort to develop a good violin technique. the instrument should feel very comfortable and natural.

Use a tape to measure the distance between the middle of the left-hand palm and the student's neck. The arm should be fully extended (see the picture).
*players in between sizes should choose the smaller size
